10 Mistakes to Avoid When Moving to Italy (From Us Italians to You) Point 6 will make some Italians angry..

Every year, many of you fall in love with Italy — and we understand why. The beauty, the food, the history, the lifestyle. But living here is not the same as visiting.

If you are planning to relocate, let us be direct with you. We say this not to discourage you, but to prepare you.

1️⃣ Romanticizing Italy and Underestimating Reality

Italy is magical — but it is also complicated.

Daily life here includes paperwork, delays, and systems that do not always move logically. If you move expecting your everyday life to feel like your vacation did, you may feel disappointed.

Italy rewards patience, not urgency

.

2️⃣ Underestimating Our Bureaucracy

Our bureaucracy is… different.

Processes are often fragmented. You may need multiple appointments for one procedure. Offices may send you to another office. You may be asked for documents you didn’t know you needed.

And yes — it can feel difficult.

Residency registration, tax numbers, healthcare enrollment, driving license conversion — none of these are “quick errands.” They require preparation, copies, stamps, and sometimes more patience than you thought you had.

Do not arrive without researching thoroughly. And always keep copies of everything.

3️⃣ Not Being Prepared for Slowness

Italy runs on a different rhythm.

Administrative processes can be slow. Very slow.

Emails may go unanswered. Calls may not be returned. Appointments may be weeks away. What takes days in other countries can take months here.

This is not always inefficiency — sometimes it is simply volume, structure, or cultural pace.

If you approach every delay with anger, you will exhaust yourself. If you approach it strategically — following up calmly and persistently — you will move forward.

In Italy, persistence works better than pressure.

4️⃣ Being Unprepared for Social Friction

Italy is a warm country — but it is also under economic pressure.

When housing becomes expensive and wages remain low, frustration grows. Some people — unfairly and wrongly — blame all foreigners, mass tourism, or international buyers for rising costs.

Let us be very clear: xenophobia is never acceptable. Resentment toward foreigners is neither justified nor productive.

But it does exist in many environments.

Especially in cities heavily impacted by tourism or housing shortages, you may encounter resistance or skepticism — particularly if you come from wealthier countries and are perceived as contributing to rising prices.

This is not universal. Many Italians are welcoming and open. But ignoring the economic tension would not prepare you realistically.

Understanding the broader instability — political, economic, social — helps you interpret reactions without taking everything personally.

5️⃣ Being Too Trusting (Scams Do Happen)

Let’s be honest: in Italy, we’re used to scams. They’re part of everyday life. We receive scam calls almost daily, and nearly every one of us has experienced at least one scam attempt at some point.

Foreigners are sometimes targeted.

Common risks include:

  • Sending apartment deposits before seeing the property.

  • Signing informal rental agreements.

  • Paying unverified intermediaries.

  • Accepting verbal promises without written contracts.

If someone pressures you or avoids paperwork, stop.

In Italy, documentation protects you. Registered contracts matter. Receipts matter. Transparency matters.

6️⃣ Expecting Constant Politeness in Service

In some countries, customer service means constant smiling and extreme politeness.

Italy is different.

You may encounter impatience. You may experience bluntness. In some service environments — especially busy ones — people may seem abrupt or even rude.

It is rarely personal.

Do not mistake a serious tone for hostility. People sometimes are simply impatient and...underpaid :-)

Stay calm, clear, and respectful — that is what works here.

7️⃣ Underestimating Regional Differences

Italy is not one culture.

Life in the north can feel structured and fast-paced. In the south, relationships and timing follow different dynamics. Bureaucracy may function differently depending on the region and even the specific office.

Research deeply before choosing where to settle

.

8️⃣ Trying to Stay in an Expat Bubble

If you only socialize with other foreigners and constantly compare Italy to your home country, integration will feel impossible.

Observe first. Adapt slowly. Accept that things are done differently — not necessarily worse.

When you make an effort, we notice. We Italians really love it when someone makes an effort to become part of our society. It warms our hearts to hear you speak our language when you come to order at the bar. It fills us with pride and joy when you adopt our gestures and body language. You need to make Italian friends as soon as possible.

9️⃣ Underestimating the Economic Reality

We need to speak openly about this.

Salaries in Italy are generally lower than in many Northern European countries or North America. At the same time, the cost of living — especially rent — has increased significantly in recent years.

Since Covid, prices have risen sharply. In many cities, housing costs have skyrocketed. Tourism, short-term rentals, and broader economic instability have all contributed to this pressure.

This creates frustration.

You may notice something else: our work culture can feel contradictory. Some environments are highly hierarchical and rigid. In other cases, inefficiency exists. Some people work endless overtime; others seem disengaged. And yet, many still struggle financially unless they already own property or have strong family support.

This can create a feeling of stagnation — a sense that working harder does not always translate into living better.

As newcomers, it’s important that you understand this context. Because it influences attitudes.
